Dreaming of a seat in a top engineering institute like an NIT, IIIT, or other Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI)? Then the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is your first major hurdle. But before you dive into intense preparation, it’s crucial to understand the eligibility criteria. This blog breaks down everything you need to know to ensure you’re on the right track!

No Age Limit!

Good news for all aspirants! The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts JEE Main, does not impose any age limit for appearing in the examination. Whether you’re a recent high school graduate or taking a gap year (or more!), you can apply. However, it’s important to remember that individual institutes might have their own age criteria for admission, so always double-check the specific requirements of your desired colleges.

Academic Qualifications: The 12th Standard is Key

This is where the core eligibility lies. To be eligible for JEE Main, you must have:

  • Passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in 2024, 2025, or be appearing in 2026. This means if you passed your 12th in 2023 or earlier, or will appear after 2026, you are generally not eligible for the current JEE Main cycle.
  • Passed from a recognized Central or State Board. This includes boards like CBSE, ICSE, and various state education boards.
  • NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) students are also eligible, provided they meet the subject requirements.
Required Subjects in Class 12:

The subjects you studied in your 12th standard are critical and depend on the course you wish to pursue:

  • For B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1): You must have studied Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a Technical Vocational Subject.
  • For B.Arch (Paper 2A): You need to have passed with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
  • For B.Planning (Paper 2B): Mathematics is the compulsory subject.
Number of Attempts: Maximize Your Chances!

The NTA allows candidates to appear for JEE Main for a maximum of three consecutive years from the year they pass their Class 12 examination. Within each year, the exam is conducted twice (January and April sessions). This effectively means you can have up to six attempts to crack JEE Main (two attempts per year for three consecutive years).

Marks Requirement for Admissions (The 75% Rule)

While there’s no minimum percentage required to appear for JEE Main, the marks you secure in your Class 12 board examination play a crucial role for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs.

  • For General category candidates: You must secure a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in your Class 12 board examination OR be in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in your respective Class 12 board examination.
  • For SC/ST candidates: The minimum required percentage is 65%.

Important Note: Private colleges and some state universities may have different 12th-class percentage requirements, so always check their specific admission criteria.

Nationality and State of Eligibility
  • Nationality: Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and foreign nationals are eligible to apply.
  • State Code of Eligibility: This is determined by the state from which you have passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination. It is NOT based on your native place or residence. For NIOS students, it’s based on the location of their study center.
